REMeDY is bringing affordable, low carbon energy to Southend.

Over 80% of the carbon footprint of Southend is from buildings (homes and commercial) and transportation. REMeDY (Revolution in Energy Market Design) has an innovative local ‘smart’ energy solution to make it possible to move away from gas and instead to use low carbon heating on the path to Southend’s 2030 Net Zero target.

REMeDY was a part-funded UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) ‘Prospering from the Energy Revolution’ challenge project led by Southend Borough Council with a consortium of partners working to bring affordable low carbon heating to residents and businesses in Southend, using a business model that is replicable across the UK.

The REMeDY Consortium partners are Southend-on-Sea Borough Council (Project Lead), SMS Plc, Vital Energi, Imperial College London, University of East Anglia, FutureGov and Places for People. The project ran until the end of May 2022.

Energy Unlocked supported Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to engage the public about the role of energy systems in net zero, support the research consortium to develop a ‘case study’ on the project learning that is useful for the borough, but also for other areas in the country, and to embed the learning in a Southend net zero strategy.
